Hola holographic

By Neslihan
It was Chalayan's fall collection (RTW 2012) that introduced me to this wonderful technique and since I've got a weakness for everything that glitters, it didn't quite take me long before I fell in love with this thing called 'holographic' or a print that rather resembles the back of your CD. Or a tacky mix of metallics. Call it what you want as long as it shines and shimmers. That's why I've created this collage, to boost your mood and mine. Enjoy. (Click on the image to make it bigger.)

Scare me

By Neslihan
Watching horror movies is always such a dilemma. I mean to watch or not to watch because you see, I'm one of the biggest cowards when it comes to horror movies. I brag about the fact that I love scary movies, that I'm an addict when it comes to watching serial killers chase girls in white sleepwear. (such a clché) The thing is though, I cannot sleep for several nights after seeing such a movie. I become paranoid when I hear freaky sounds when I'm home alone and my brain starts to go in overdrive. Might it be Freddy Krueger of Leather Face? "You're just imagening things, Neslihan. It's only your mind", I tell myself. I try to focus on other things. "Think about bees and flowers, Neslihan. Think about pretty stuff", I advice myself. And of course the best part of all this is that I have to go to the toilet at night. My blatter becomes stressed but I try to ignore that fact. Hey you, I've just watched a horror movie. I'm so not going to the restroom, there's where the freakiest things happen. I press every switch I find to light up every room I pass by. I'm a hygienic person, you see? So I always wash my hands after this little visit. We have this huge mirror in front of the sink so I try not to look at myself when washing my hands, afraid of seeing misformed creatures in the mirror. (The Amityville Horror) I've got this vivid sense for fantasy, as you can read. It never stops me though from watching those films because it's such a rush. It's bigger than life, it's exciting, it breaks the monotony of an ordinary day and it's not exhausting. Relax, grab a scary movie and let the party begin.

Creative-Director, noun, countable, business

By Neslihan
Creative director. It's a funny word. One simply cannot be creative and a director. As a director you've got responsibilities and those might limit your imagination, creativity. You start to worry about the financial part of the job and that might cause a lot of headache. I don't really know how it goes in the fashion buz but why not protecting them from those financial bollocks? In that way the artist will be able to focus on the stricktly artistical part. And he'll let his creativity lead him to the edges of his imagination. Using 100 % of his ideas because that's the only limit there should be. In some kind of way though designers have to hold in and pull back because they have to take wearability and saleability into account. They start with dreams and big plans and eventually end up with huge loans they cannot pay any longer. That's also what has happened with Christian Lacroix and with the Belgian Christophe Coppens, noted accessory maker. And the list will get longer in the future since recession is making us all critical on what to buy.
Another thing that bothers me is the speed with which fashion designers are getting sacked because they simply cannot live up to the marketing standards. You don't sell? Well, you don't design any longer. It's sickening to see amazing artists getting replaced just like that. Forgotten in the silence of eternity. I sometimes hate our economic atmosphere in which everything depends on profit. When you notice that the economical part jumps in front of the artistic one, you should know that there's where you stop. Because artists are the ultimate anarchists, they don't do the expected. They should only follow their heart or am I living in a utopia created by my ignorancy?

"Oh em gee, she's fooling around with paint!"

By Neslihan
Hello there crazies,
I felt a little bored yesterday and had the uncontrollable urge to play with paint. It's funny how something stupid can immediately beam you  to a certain phrase in your life. And yes, I'm talking about my years as a 10 or 11-year-old. You know, that period during which you think you know everything but the scariest things still have to come, along with puberty. You're exploring everything, clothing, music and even the internet. Dressing dolls and feeling like Tim Gunn. Oh, the good ol' times. Seeing a couple of pieces on the catwalk also evoked that nostalgic feeling. Christopher kane played with shiny metalics for his last s/s collection and also made some flower collages, which reminded me of my own fashion collages. When we moved to an unparticular middle of nowhere, I felt alone and bored. So, I had to find some kind of way to amuse myself. I started to collect gossip magazines (the only magazines in our house back then) and ripped the last style pages out of it and started to cut and paste images on a white sheet of paper. I'd write titles with coloured glitter pens and one day, those titles became full articles. One page became many and this way, I'd create my own fashion magazine without stupid advertisings. I'd give my magazines names but don't ask me which because the only name I can remember is 'Heirs'. Don't ask me why either. As I became older though, I discovered fashion magazines and started collecting them without ripping pages out of it. Because I knew every edition of Vogue or L'officiel was a holy beacon of inspiration that had cost its creators blood, sweat, tears and uncountable hours of overtime work. You don't start to cut in the bible, do you? One day making childish fashion magazines wasn't enough though, so I had to find some other way to temper my fashion hunger. That way was blogging. I started blogging on netlog and later on facebook. Then on weblog, to eventually start a blog on blogger. That's the little journey I've made so far. Coming back on the pictures below: they're from various collections. I've picked the ones of which I thought they'd be interesting to accompany my writing. Scroll down for more information.

I am so in love with this cute, little clutch. It looks like it's a picture from some biology textbook. Very nostalgia-proof. Christopher Kane (s/s 2012 RTW)
Riccardo Tisci really is one of the last masters of sheer haute couture. His s/s 2012 HC collection for Givenchy was memorable. Certainly the first two dresses. I wouldn't call it spring/summer though because the heavy colours and fabrics scream fall/winter. It were not the clothes though that held my attention. No, this time it were the accessories. What about this amazing nosering?

I thought this was a funny way to tell the person next to you to shut the hell up. Marc by Marc Jacobs

Two rules when buying a bag:
  1. Big enough to hide my junk.
  2. Aesthetically interesting to look at.
Conclusion: this Lacoste bag has it all.

If I want to be amazed, repulsed or happy I turn to Martin. He knows how to awake those feelings all at once. Those shoes above really remind me of a friend's transparant raincoat from back then. Maison Martin Margiela s/s 2012 RTW

Do you remember yourself painting when you were little. You'd mingle the blues and the reds and the yellows, really thinking those colours went well together. You'd finish your painting and your mum or dad would call it an artwork and hang it on their wall or freezer. Well, that's what Junya Watanabe's model reminded me of. Green painted gummy hair + bitchy face = Junya Watanabe s/s 2012 RTW
